1. Invest in Proper Footwear
Anyone who plans on exercising regularly needs to have a dependable pair of shoes. Without a great pair of shoes, you may find yourself in pain after every workout.
Those who don't have proper footwear can actually end up injuring themselves and pushing their progress back even further. If you injure yourself, you may have to wait to meet your fitness goals. You could even undo some of the work you've already done.
We should also note that you shouldn't have to break in sneakers. Many people think that you have to run around in your sneakers for a while before they're going to be comfortable.
This is wrong.
Your sneakers should be comfortable the first time you put them on and every time after that. Make sure you can run in your pair before you buy them.
2. Keep Hydrated
Never work out without having water somewhere near you. Anyone could easily become dehydrated, even by the easiest of workouts.
Make sure that you aren't skipping out on the water so that you don't end up becoming overly tired or extremely weak. This is another instance where you could hurt yourself so badly that you could undo the progress you've already made.
We should also note that you need to be drinking enough water throughout the day as well. Your body continues to burn calories even after you're done working out. You need to fuel up if you're going to make your body the strongest it can be.
3. Correct Your Posture
Your posture is everything when it comes to working out. If you don't have the right posture while you're trying to work out, you aren't going to put in the work that a certain move is meant to make you do.
You could also seriously injure yourself.
You should consistently be correcting your posture to make sure that you aren't harming your body. In fact, if you have a workout buddy, you should have them check your posture every once in a while. You can check up on them too.
If you don't have a workout buddy, we recommend working out in front of a mirror if you can. You'll find this helpful in checking and correcting your posture, especially for slower moves like those found in yoga and pilates.
4. Take Breaks
Everyone needs a break from time to time, especially beginners. Don't expect that you can run through a 60-minute workout without having to take a break to catch your breath every once in a while.
As you work out more, you'll build your endurance and be able to do these workouts no problem. You have to work up to this, though.
Don't force yourself to work out if you're in pain. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and forcing yourself to complete a workout are two different things.
Take care of yourself and give yourself the break you need whenever you need it. It's a great excuse to grab a drink of water.
5. Plan a Rest Day
We understand your excitement about working out, but you shouldn't do high-intensity workouts every single day. You need to have some kind of rest day.
If you're a runner, your rest day may look like a workout involving a brisk walk rather than a running marathon. If you enjoy HIIT workouts, you may want to focus on yoga for a day.
Whatever your preference, just make sure that your rest day is – in fact – a rest day. It's okay to strive to be better in every workout you do, but we wouldn't want you to hurt yourself.
Taking one day off could actually help your body recover from some of the more intense workouts throughout the week. It won't set you back in your training.
6. Sleep at Night
If you aren't sleeping well at night, your workouts aren't going to be as beneficial as you want them to be. In fact, they could just be wearing you out even more.
Getting enough sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. You can't be a true fitness guru without adequate sleep.
As you start sleeping more, you'll find that your workouts will get better and you'll get stronger overall. Take the time that you need to sleep.
7. Push Yourself
As you learn more and more about your body and how you enjoy working out, you should start pushing yourself. As we mentioned earlier, we don't want you to hurt yourself.
However, we do recommend that you start getting into intermediate workouts as you begin to find those beginner workouts too easy.
Don't be afraid to increase the incline on your treadmill or speed up your rower. However you choose to work out, you should kick it up a notch every once in a while.
